Casa Reta was
built in 1986 by Phillip Applequist as a home for his large family. Mr.
Applequist was a well-known, local contractor who built many homes in Davie.
He claimed that he first bought the 300-year old doors, which were
previously in a monastery in England, to grace the mansion and then built
this southern plantation style home to fit them.
Mr. Applequist created a workshop and paint booth on the
property where he restored old automobiles. He also built his own
airplane in the large barn-like structure behind the main house.
Unfortunately, he died in an airplane accident in his own plane.
Subsequently, his widow sold the property to a church who then sold the property
to the present owners, Reta, Guy & Jeni Grant in 2005.
The Grants are long-time residents of South Florida, whose
roots extend to early Miami when John Grant, as engineer, brought the first
train to Miami for Mr. Flagler.
The Grants lived in several homes in Ojus, Miami Gardens,
Miramar, and Southwest Ranches prior to moving into Casa Reta. Guy Grant is
well-known in the fire safety industry in South Florida. Reta
Grant is a retired Customs Officer and labor union chapter president.
Reta is
fulfilling a dream of hers to offer her lovely home to people for hosting
parties of any kind.
